Tokyo Olympics 2020
The Summer Olympic Games, also known as the Games of the Olympiad,
is a major international multi-sport event normally held once every four years.
The inaugural Games took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The most recent
Olympics which were supposed to be held in the year 2020, took place in the
year 2021 as they were postponed/rescheduled due to the Coronavirus.
India at Tokyo Olympics, 2020
A total of 127 athletes, including two alternate players and one reserve goalkeeper in men's and women's hockey squads respectively, across 18 sporting categories were part of India's Olympic contingent. The total size of the contingent, including the coaches, support staff and officials, counts to 228. 6-time world champion boxer M C Mary Kom and Men's Hockey Team skipper Manpreet Singh were India's flag bearers at the opening ceremony whereas Wrestler Bajrang Punia was India's flag bearer during the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

The country stood at the 48th position in the medal table out of 86 countries. India finished the Games with its best-ever Olympic medal tally of 7 in Tokyo Games 2020, surpassing the previous best record of 6 medals at the 2012 London Olympics. Indian contingent win 7 medals comprising 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals.

Men’s Javelin Throw: Neeraj Chopra
Neeraj Chopra (24 December 1997) is an Indian track and field
athlete who competes in the javelin throw. Chopra was born to Satish Kumar and
Saroj Devi in Khandra village, Panipat District, Haryana. He has two sisters
and his family is largely involved in agriculture. He graduated from Dayanand
Anglo-Vedic College in Chandigarh, and as of 2021, is pursuing a Bachelor of
Arts from Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab. He is the first
track and field athlete to win a gold medal for India at the Olympics. He is
also the first track and field athlete from India to win at the IAAF World U20
Championships, where in 2016 he achieved a world under-20 record throw of 86.48
m, becoming the first Indian athlete to set a world record. He is the youngest-ever
Indian Olympic gold medalist in an individual event and the only one to have
won gold in his Olympic debut.

Women’s 49kg Weightlifting: Mirabai Chanu
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (8 August 1994) is an Indian weightlifter. Saikhom
Mirabai Chanu was born in Nongpok Kakching about 30 km away from Imphal city,
Manipur to a Meitei family. Her family identified her strength when she was
just 12. She won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Women's 49 kg
category. Mirabai Chanu has won the World Championships and multiple medals at
the Commonwealth Games. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of
India for her contributions to the sport. She was awarded Major Dhyan Chand
Khel Ratna award by the Government of India in 2018.
Men’s Freestyle 57kg Wrestling: Ravi Dahiya
Ravi Kumar Dahiya, also known as Ravi Kumar (12 December 1997)
hails from the village Nahri in Sonipat district, Haryana. Since age 10, Dahiya
was trained by Satpal Singh at the Chhatrasal Stadium in North Delhi. His
father Rakesh Dahiya, a small farmer, would travel around 39 km every day from
their village to the Chhatrasal stadium to deliver fresh milk and fruits, which
were part of his wrestling diet, for more than a decade. He is an Indian
freestyle wrestler who won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 57
kg category. Dahiya is also a bronze medalist from 2019 World Wrestling
Championships and a two-time Asian champion.

Women’s Welterweight Boxing: Lovlina Borgohain
Lovlina Borgohain (2 October 1997) hails from the Golaghat district of Assam. Her parents are Tiken and Mamoni Borgohain. She is an Indian amateur boxer who won a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the women's welterweight event, becoming only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. She also won bronze medal at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships and the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. She won the gold medal at 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament held in New Delhi and Silver medal at 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati. Borgohain is the first female athlete and the second boxer from Assam to represent the state in the Olympics. In 2020, she became the sixth person from Assam to receive Arjuna Award.
Women’s Singles Badminton: PV Sindhu
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu (5 July 1995) born to P. V. Ramana and P.
Vijayais hails from Hyderabad. She is an Indian professional badminton player.
Over the course of her career, Sindhu has won medals at multiple tournaments
including Olympics and on the BWF circuit including gold at the 2019 World
Championships. She is the first Indian to become the Badminton World Champion
and only the second individual athlete from India to win two consecutive medals
at the Olympic Games. She rose to a career-high world ranking of no. 2 in April
2017. Sindhu broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Ranking in September 2012,
at the age of 17. Beginning in 2013, she won a medal at every world
championships, with the exception of 2015. She is just the second woman after
Zhang Ning to win five or more medals at the world championships. She
represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics (Rio), becoming the first Indian
badminton player to reach a final. She won the silver medal after losing out to
Spain's Carolina Marin. She made her second consecutive Olympic appearance at
the 2020 Summer Olympics (Tokyo) and won a bronze medal, becoming the first
Indian woman ever to win two Olympic medals. Sindhu won her first super series
title at the 2016 China Open and followed it up with four more finals in 2017,
winning the titles in South Korea and India. In addition to that, she has won a
silver medal each at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Asian Games, and two
bronze medals at the Uber Cup.
Men’s 65kg Freestyle Wrestling: Bajrang Punia
Bajrang Punia (26 February 1994) born in the Khudan village of Jhajjar district in the state of Haryana, India. He is an Indian freestyle wrestler, who competes in the 65-kg weight category. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Punia won a bronze medal by defeating Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov with a wide 8-0 margin. Punia is the only Indian wrestler to win 3 medals at the World Wrestling Championships. He was awarded Arjuna Award in 2015. He has won various National and International Medals. He is married to fellow wrestler Sangita Phogat, who is one of the famed Phogat sisters
Men’s Hockey: India Men’s Hockey Team
The India men's national field hockey team represents India in
international Field hockey competitions, and is governed by Hockey India. The
team was formerly under the control of Indian Hockey Federation. India was the
first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation. In
1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal and until 1960, the Indian
men's team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, winning six gold medals in a row.
The team had a 30–0 winning streak during this time, from their first game
until losing in the 1960 gold medal final. India also won the World Cup in
1975. India's hockey team is the most successful team ever in the Olympics,
having won eight gold medals in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 and
1980. India also has the best overall performance in Olympic history with 83
victories out of the 134 matches played. They have also scored the most goals
in the Olympics than any other team. They are also the only team to ever win
the Olympics without conceding a single goal in 1928 and 1956. The men in blues are also one of the most successful team in Asia.
They have won the Asian Games three times in the year 1966, 1998 and 2014.
India came out on top in the Asia Cup in 2003, 2007 and in 2017. India has won
43 out of the 56 matches, the most by any team in the Asia Cup both in absolute
and proportional terms. They are also the most successful team in the Asian
Champions Trophy by winning the competition three times in 2011, 2016 and in
2018. In total, India has won 27 official international titles.
